Aural Rehabilitation

At the Goshen Speech and Hearing Center, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss to improve patient interaction and communication. Aural rehabilitation is a therapy process that can be used for children and adults which focuses on adjusting to diagnosed hearing losses, optimizing the use of hearing aids, and developing compensatory strategies for participating in conversations. Aural rehabilitation for children focuses on developing auditory perception skills, developing language skills, and learning how to manage hearing aids and assistive listening devices. The services depend on the child’s individual needs and are based on the following factors: http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Child-Aural-Audiologic-Habilitation/
  • The child’s age
  • Age when the hearing loss began
  • Age when hearing loss was discovered
  • Degree of hearing loss
  • Type of hearing loss
  • Age of child when hearing aids were first used
Aural rehabilitation for adults targets understanding hearing loss and the use of hearing aids, learning to listen again, controlling conversations, and developing communication enhancement strategies. Regardless of whether the patient is a child or an adult, the aural rehabilitation program team members are the same. The principal members that collaborate are the audiologist, the speech-language pathologist, otologist, and the patient’s family physician. Speech and aural rehabilitation therapy addresses:
  • Communication strategies
  • Lip reading and speech reading training
  • Auditory training
  • Articulation of speech sounds
  • Information and educational resources
Because hearing loss affects the entire family, communication partners and family members are encouraged to participate. The Goshen Speech and Hearing Center provides professional audiology, speech-language pathology, and aural rehabilitation therapy services to children and adults of Orange County, NY and the Greater Hudson Valley community as well as the surrounding areas of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.
